| SOUTHWESTERN MICHIGAN ECONOMIC GROWTH ALLIANCE, INC. (SMEGA) STRATEGIC PLAN Mission Statement Southwestern Michigan Economic Growth Alliance, Inc. is a nonprofit economic development corporation promoting industrial retention and the creation of jobs in the Greater Niles and Buchanan areas. The Greater Southwest Michigan area encompasses the City of Niles, Niles Township, City of Buchanan, Buchanan Township, Bertrand Township, Milton Township, Howard Township, Three Oaks Township, Three Oaks Village, Galien Township and Galien Village with its primary emphasis on the Greater Niles area. Vision Statement Southwestern Michigan Economic Growth Alliance, Inc. is committed to being the primary economic development organization to ensure the retention and creation of jobs and tax base with the Greater Southwest Michigan area; in the industrial segment of the local economy through professional, responsive interaction with all concerned parties; by serving as a support agency for other organizations in the area of retail development; and accountable to the Board, Membership, and Community by achieving the goals of the five-year strategic plan are all areas attainable by the SMEGA. Objectives • Within the industrial segment, SMEGA will strengthen, retain, and assist in the expansion of existing businesses as its primary goal of the job preservation, with continuing emphasis on job attraction. • The SMEGA shall create a pro-business climate for the retention and attraction of industrial jobs through effective communication, organization, and planning among the participating municipalities, private enterprise and public service providers, supporting a quality, healthy business environment. • The SMEGA will foster open communication with an active Board by working with the governmental agencies to set a clear method by which to obtain necessary governmental and inter-governmental approvals and cooperation. • To create new jobs, SMEGA will promote an entrepreneurial climate in our community. This emphasizes start-ups, or new businesses rather than the recruitment of existing businesses from other municipalities. • The SMEGA will establish strategic alliances with local, state, and federal organizations; financial institutions and foundations by taking advantage of incentive programs, resources, and future opportunities to enhance economic development. • The SMEGA will work to expand and continue development of our existing industrial parks and planning for future land areas since its critical to both existing and new businesses, as well as the maintaining of industrial building and sites inventory. • The SMEGA shall review the industrial development potential for the area, coordinate necessary activities and recognize the workforce development issues that are critical to the success of the area. • The SMEGA will create a method for knowledge of training through local educational sources (Public Schools, Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College, and Workforce Development). • Where special programs are needed, SMEGA will act as a catalyst in the industrial and/or educational community to develop such training programs. • The SMEGA will promote both the existing and proposed development of areas for transportation (air, rail, roadway, water, as well as infrastructure). • The SMEGA will implement a marketing plan identifying targeted locations and industries. • The SMEGA will create and implement public relations and communications program. • The SMEGA shall facilitate new business start-ups by providing direct service through the Business Development Center and coordination of other small business assistance programs. • The SMEGA will provide technical assistance and development with counseling, training, financial resources and regulations for start-up and existing businesses with advisory services from Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College, SCORE, and financial institutions. • The SMEGA will serve in a support role for the Berrien County Manufacturer's Council with similar and compatible roles. • The SMEGA shall monitor itself and other organizations to ensure that effective and efficient economic development services are being provided for the area, and to be the strong voice for economic issues. • The SMEGA shall promote leadership among community members for economic development, and set meaningful and attainable goals and projects and complete them in a timely fashion. |
